I was told a story about a ticket agent at a train station who was helping a grandfather and his 4-year-old grandson, who were about to be future passengers. The ticket agent referred to the 4-year-old as a child when figuring out the price for his seat. The child expressed to his grandfather that he was offended and wanted to be referred to as a kid, not a child.
No one wants to feel low in social rank, and this child wants to advance his position. But there is a problem. He still behaves like a child. For example, he can't keep quiet when his grandparents are watching their favorite weekly news program. He doesn't want to eat the required foods. And he still cannot ride a bicycle without *1 training wheel.
I propose that the passage from child to kid should first require the completion of specific criteria, and then a graduation called "Kidom" will take place. After that, the child will be referred to as a kid. This will help parents teach their kids that if they want to advance in social rank, they must grow up a little first.
A criteria could be learning to swim or doing weekly chores.
I'm no expert on this matter, and therefore I may not be qualified to vote. Perhaps [New State] parents who have been there can gather to express their thoughts and vote on this subject.
That kid is now 6 years old, and he can ride a bike like nobodies business.
*1 It is my understanding that bicycle training wheels are counterproductive. A better way is a balance bike (a bike with no pedals). Maybe the balance bike should be the official two-wheel starter bike for [New State] members.
